Kenyans dominate again at Cebu marathon

CEBU CITY — Kenyan nationals Richard Mutisya and Joan Jeruto won the men’s and women’s competitions, respectively, of the Cebu City Marathon on Sunday.

Mutisya breasted the tape in 2 hours, 28 minutes, and 41 seconds, while Jeruto swept the women’s event in 3:13:28. Each winner took home the P60,000 winner’s cheque.

The men’s category became a Kenyan-dominated competition as eight of the 10 top spots went to the Kenyans. Aside from Mutisya, other Kenyan top finishers are David Kipuang (2nd place), Fredrick Mathiu (3rd), Philip Rono (4th), Josphat Kiptanui (5th), Abraham Misos (6th), Francis Kakui (7th), and James Meibei (9th).  (Read more) See photos



Tabal tops Sinulog 5K

PERENNIAL winners Kenyan Joshphat Kiptanui and Mary Joy Tabal capped this year with a victory in the Sinulog Fun Run yesterday at the Cebu City Sports Center.

Kiptanui, who was unsure of joining the run at first, bagged the coveted P10,000 cash prize in the 5K men’s open after crossing the finish line in 15:24.

Mendel Lopez came in at second place in 16:29 and Jobert Carolino arrived 10 seconds later for third place in 16:39. (Read more)

500 sign up for Sinulog Run

DESPITE just short notice, the Sinulog Fun Run slated this Dec. 30 is already halfway through its expected number of runners.

The run, which will start at the Cebu City Sports Center, is a 5K race, and will follow the carousel route in every Sinulog Grand Parade.

With the official announcement of the run made just last week, there are already 500 registered runners.

“We are targetting 1,000 runners,“ said Ricky Ballesteros, executive director of the Sinulog Foundation. (Read more)

Guidelines for Sinulog chess tournament

THE Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association Inc. (Cepca), with the support of the Cebu City government, is pleased to invite all chess teams to the 2012 Sinulog Open chess team tournament on Jan. 7-8 at SM City.

This team tournament is open to all schools, clubs, companies, barangays, cities, municipalities, government agencies and other interested groups.

Sinulog adds sports

APART from Sinulog sights and sounds, Cebuanos will also be treated to various sporting events as the Sinulog Foundation has teamed up with the Cebu City Sports Commission to add a sporting theme to the annual Sinulog celebration.

A fun run, baseball and softball tournament, football festival and a chess tournament will be included in the sports component of the Sinulog 2012 festivities.

“Sinulog has long been known as the festival of arts and it should include sports,” said Sinulog Foundation Executive Director Ricky Ballesteros. (Read more)


Cepca offers P80,000 for Sinulog chess

THE top Cebuano chess players are expected to put up a winning team as they plunge into action in the Cebu Executive and Professionals Chess Association (Cepca) organized Sinulog Chess Team tournament on Jan. 7 and 8 at SM City-Cebu.

Nearly P80,000 in cash prizes will be given to the winners in this tournament, which will feature four-man teams and an alternate.

Frank “Boy” Pestaño, press officer of Cepca, said that the event will run for seven rounds with 30 minutes time control and five-second increments per move.

“Aside from the cash prizes, there will be a 24-inche signature trophy that will be handed to the winner. The total cash prize is P76,500 but there will be additional prizes if more teams join,” Pestaño told Sun.Star Cebu. (Read more)

13 teams join Sinulog Cup

THE Sinulog softball/baseball Cup 2012 is expected to be a hit as 13 teams have signed up for the tournament organized by the Sinulog Foundation Inc. and the Cebu City Sports Commission (CSCC).

Tournament director Dionisio Bacarisas told Sun.Star Cebu that the 13 teams will have their opening on Dec. 11 at the Labagon Elementary School grounds.

“These 13 teams have signed up to play in the Men’s Open Softball. They all submitted their line-ups and registration the day the announcement for the registration came out in the news,” Bacarisas said.

CCSC executive director Brando Velasquez earlier announced that participation in the men’s open tournament will be limited to only 12 teams but they have agreed to have 13 teams. (Read more)
