44 groups enlist for parade

FORTY-FOUR dancing contingents will compete in two categories in the Sinulog grand parade this Sunday, as 64 floats, puppeteers and higante entries signed up to add color and entertainment to this year’s activity.

Even with fewer out-of-town contingents this year, the Sinulog Foundation Inc. (SFI) expects a spectacular grand parade with new concepts and dance movements since a lot of first-timers signed up.

The foundation has so far sold 9,000 of the 10,000 tickets for the grandstand seats.

While the outcome of the registration is promising, Sinulog organizers fear the bad weather would ruin the performances of the contingents.

They will offer trays of eggs—their third offering so far—to the Carmelites Monastery again today to pray for good weather on Sunday.

“Magpadala na sad ta ug mga itlog kay sa tinuoray lang, we are worried. Not only for the outcome of the parade if it rains but also for the safety of the children. They might slip and hurt themselves,” Sinulog project director Dolores Suzara told Sun.Star Cebu.

The SFI received yesterday the P10-million financial assistance from the Cebu City Government.

SFI Executive Director Ricky Ballesteros said they don’t have any problems with the funding, as sponsorships continue to come in.

The registration of the contingents and entries closed yesterday with 44 entries, nine of which are from provinces outside of Cebu. The number is fewer compared to last year’s 12 entries from other provinces.

Among the out-of-town contingents competing in the free interpretation category are Abuyog in Leyte, Placer in Masbate, Taclo-ban City, Borongan in Samar, Siargao Island, Lanao del Norte and Dulag in Leyte.

Tangub City and Sta. Catalina in Negros Oriental will compete in the Sinulog-based category.

The contingent of Alpha Kappa Rho (Akhro) failed to convince the organizers that it could compete in the grand parade, but Ballesteros said they gave the fraternity another chance to improve their performance.
While the group met the required number of dancers, which is 60 to 100, it still has not produced any costumes and props, which the organizers also want to check. (LCR)
